Lulu's Medals

There are pictures here of both Lucie's Resistance medals and her father's (Guillaume) which he won for his gallantry in the Great War.

Both sets of medals are now with Peter's sister Ann who will pass them to Lucie's great-grandson Gabriel.
Lucie took rememberance parades very seriously, not until her health deteriorated significantly did she miss a parade.

Lucie here is getting ready to parade at the Cenotaph in London - her legs no longer able to support her she became her own motorised corps! She's wearing her medals and carrying the standard she proudly bore for the 'Milice Patriotique' as their UK representative. The standard has a small Union Jack sewn on in one corner which was presented to her by Field Marshall Montgomery after the liberation of Brussels.

The Milice Patriotique standard was itself finally presented to Lucie in 1981. It was her pride and joy - clandestinely made during the occupation, Lulu carried it on the day Brussels was liberated in 1945.

Guillaume's Medals

Guillaume Vanosmael was a remarkable man in his own right and lost an arm at the Battle of Ypres in the 1914-18 war while serving in the Belgian Army and was highly decorated. His own tale is told in the forthcoming biographical work for Lucie. Their stories inevitably intertwine as the end up fighting in the resistance together, for now here are Guillaume's medals.
